From March 12 to 14, 2024, a practical seminar on the topic “Introduction to Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for Archeology” was held in the city of Samarkand. The event was organized by University College London (UCL) in collaboration with the International Institute for Central Asian Studies (IICAS). The seminar was opened by Evren Rutbil, Director of IICAS, Dr. Guy Joraev, co-director of the Central Asian Archaeological Landscapes (CAAL) project, and Dr. Dmitry Voyakin, project coordinator from IICAS. Lectures and practical sessions were delivered by Dr. Marco Nebbia and by CAAL researchers - Ms. Katya Turchin and Mr. Patrick Cuthbertson.

The course participants were 11 archaeologists from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, who deepened their knowledge through the second phase of the CAAL project and gained valuable practical skills in working with GIS, including creating map layouts, processing raster and vector data, and sampling and analysis techniques information. The training was conducted using the CAAL database, which is a digital record of archaeological findings and landscapes in Central Asia.

Upon completion of the course, all participants were awarded certificates confirming their participation and mastery of the material taught during the seminar.
