The reviewed monograph Karakalpak Ornament: Form and Significance introduces to its reader the figurative language of the Karakalpak applied and decorative arts and crafts, presented in ornamental forms. The imperishable significance of their sign system was determined by the absence of any writing system among the Karakalpaks in the historical past. Along with the artistic and aesthetic value, such ornament performed the most important communicative function. Having preserved its ancient roots, the Karakalpak ornament also represents a unique source for the study of the centuries-old long-standing traditions of the people, their ethnogenesis and ethnic history, worldview, contacts and connections with neighboring cultures.
