Dear colleagues!

On the initiative of a number of well-known scientists the International Institute for Central Asian Studies – IICAS (Samarkand) – plans to publish in August 2021 the collection of works dedicated to the 70th anniversary of Yerbulat Akizhanovich Smagulov (1952-2019), which will be celebrated next year. It welcomes participation of those who was closely acquainted with this outstanding researcher of late antique and medieval archaeology of Central Asia, who remembered his work, and who appreciates his contribution to the archaeology and history of the vast region.
The collection will consist of two main sections: memories of the hero of the day with the results of his work and a series of scientific articles covering a wide range of interests of Yerbulat Akizhanovich: starting from the late antique Kangju, Chach and Sogdia to archaeology and the history of the late Medieval khanates, continuing until their annexation to the Russian Empire. He was particularly focused on the study of ceramics, medieval dwellings, a number of crafts, ancient pre-Islamic religion and early Islam.
Apart from archaeology, the publication will include a wide range of related topics that were of great interest to Smagulov: restoration and museumification of archaeological sites, reconstruction of historical landscapes, epigraphy, tamgas and numismatics, popularization of the highlights in archaeology and historical heritage and the problem of creating protection zones and "archaeological" tourism. The collection especially welcomes the memoirs of those well-known media workers, professional photographers and other specialists who worked closely with Smagulov.
