Made in USSR is the title of the publication that received a grant from IICAS. The publication under review offers a study of the history of interethnic marriages using the example of the residents of Samarkand – an atypical phenomenon in pre-revolutionary times, but rather natural in the era of internationalism and rejection of religious and national traditions.

The World War II years have transferred Samarkand into a large industrial city where many evacuated enterprises operated. Various displaced persons – the Armenians, Koreans, Crimean Tatars, and Chechens – have settled in the region; the mentioned area has received plenty of refugees. In Soviet times, the issue of nationality was quite acute, thus interethnic marriage could drastically simplify one’s life. However, the regularity does not imply routine and commonness; therefore the existence of such marriages, even nowadays, is not always perceived positively.

The reviewed book contains more than 700 stories, in which, in addition to the plot, various ethnological aspects such as native language, mentality, cultural preferences, features of onomastics, etc. are highlighted.

The monograph will be published at the end of 2021.
