In 2022, Professor R. Suleymanov, a well-known archaeologist, was awarded a grant to study the foundations of the genesis of the most ancient material cultures in Uzbekistan. A creative team of young people led by the researcher studies the temporal characteristics of the formation of landscapes during the development of cultures in the Stone and early Iron Ages, which became the basis of early civilizations in the region.

Within the framework of this project, R. Suleymanov's expedition conducted archaeological research in Sherabad District of Surkhandarya region, along the tributaries of the Sherabad River. The result was the discovery of a cave and three sheds in the Khatak-Darya valley. The cultural layers of the three sheds contained early Iron Age layers, in one of which individual Stone Age finds were recorded. A survey of the main cave in the Khatak valley suggested that it served as a base camp for a small Neanderthal family or tribal group with children.

The expedition of the National Archaeological Center under the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan headed by R. Suleymanov plans to continue studying the historico-geological, archaeological, palaeobotanical and palaeozoological aspects of the Stone Age in Uzbekistan. The results are to be published in a final monograph.
