The International Institute for Central Asian Studies (IICAS) announces the 3^rd online lecture dedicated to the 100th anniversary of Prof. Vladimir LIVSHITS (1923 – 2017) to be given on September 29, 2023, by Prof. Yutaka YOSHIDA, Professor Emeritus of Kyōto University. The lecture is entitled “Three Sogdian Inscriptions from Mongolia”.

The lecture is dedicated to the three Sogdian inscriptions that have been well-known as discovered in Mongolia: Karabalgasun, Bugut, and Sevrey. All three inscriptions were discovered and studied by Russian scientists. Editiones principes of the Bugut and Sevrey inscriptions were prepared by Professor V.A. Livshits almost simultaneously with the discovery, while the best material for studying the Karabalgasun inscription remains to be the rubbings published by Radloff in the late 19th century. In 1997 Prof. Yoshida had an opportunity to visit the three sites in Mongolia and investigate the two epitaphs studied by Livshits in situ. In this lecture commemorating the centenary of Vladimir A. Livshits, Prof. Yoshida would like to review some of his own studies of the three inscriptions. Although the contents and the dating of the badly damaged Sevrey inscription have not been settled, Karabalgasun inscription is known to commemorate the eighth Uighur khagan (r. 808-821), and the proper names encountered in the Bugut inscription indicates that the epitaph was prepared in the late sixth century under the First Tujue Khaganate.
